Witch-hazel (Hamamelis vernalis) is a small tree or large shrub to 15 ft. tall (typically 6') native to east Texas. Its multiple, crooked stems form an irregular, open crown. Older stems assume an attractive gray to grayish-brown color.

The first to bloom in winter, witch hazel flowers are yellow to red, four-petaled and 1/2 " long. To avoid freeze damage, the petals roll up on very cold days. Fall color develops late and is an attractive golden-yellow.

Uses: Fall and winter color. This species can be commonly used for wind breaks and erosion control. Wildlife benefits are food and cover.
