Blackgum or black tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica) is an attractive deciduous tree with shiny dark-green leaves, small blue-black fruits and brilliant red fall color. Blackgum grows on deep, moist soils and along streams. Blackgum grows 30-60 ft. or taller, with horizontally spreading branches. A bottle-shaped trunk forms if grown in shallow standing water. Older, larger trees often contain hollows that are used by cavity-nesting wildlife.
Uses: Blackgum can be used for reforestation and wetland restoration. Wildlife benefits are food and cover.
